In 2001, Children’s Forest opened the Visitor Information Center, located at the base of the National Children’s Forest Land, adjacent to Keller Peak Road. This unique nature center is the only one in the country operated by youth volunteers. Here, Youth Naturalists are available to answer any questions you may have about the San Bernardino National Forest, whether it be about local flora and fauna or where to drive your off-highway vehicle! They can direct you to the best hiking spots, campgrounds, and more. Stop and listen to our Youth Naturalists as they talk about the items on our Naturalist table.
Newly remodeled in 2010, the Children’s Forest is home to interpretive forest displays designed by and for youth! Stop by to check out the new design, get forest information and passes, complete fun nature themed crafts or go on a nature walk with Youth Volunteers. The Visitor Information Center also houses the Adventure Outpost, a small nature-themed gift store where you can find field guides, maps,and books.
Recreation Opportunities
Recreationists can enjoy the following activities on Children’s Forest land:
- Hike the 4.5-mile Exploration Trail, designed by children
- Hike the original ¾ -mile Interpretive Trail
- Camp at one of the 10 yellow-post campsites
- Take a group to one of the 3 group campsites
- Enjoy panoramic views from the Historic Keller Peak Fire Tower
- Mountain Biking
- Rock Climbing
- Equestrian Trails
- Snowshoeing

The Visitor Information Center is located 1 mile east of Running Springs on Hwy. 18. It is attached to the U.S. Forest Service Deerlick Fire Station.
